Topic 1 of 5
Word Reading
How it’s taught in school
Children improve fluency in reading by applying phonics knowledge to decode words and recognising alternative sounds for graphemes. They read words of two or more syllables and increase their recognition of common exception words.
Try it at home
- Create flashcards with words of two or more syllables and practise reading them together to boost confidence.
- Play a 'find the sound' game where your child spots different graphemes or exception words in a familiar book.
- Use letter tiles or magnetic letters to create words with common suffixes and practise blending sounds together.
