Topic 1 of 5
Reading – Word Reading
How it’s taught in school
Year 4 students deepen their understanding of complex words by applying knowledge of prefixes and suffixes, as well as root words. They read aloud with increasing accuracy, practising to pronounce unfamiliar words based on known patterns and sounds.
Try it at home
- Practise breaking down longer words with your child, discussing the meanings of common prefixes and suffixes (e.g., un-, re-, -ly).
- Use flashcards of words that include prefixes and suffixes, and challenge your child to identify the root word in each.
- Create a 'word family tree,' where the child finds different words related to a single root (e.g., play, replay, playful).
