Topic 1 of 5
Reading - Word Reading
How it’s taught in school
Year 6 pupils refine word reading skills, including the use of root words, prefixes, and suffixes to read and understand complex words. They should work independently to decode unfamiliar words by focusing on morphology (root words and affixes) and etymology (word origin).
Try it at home
- Encourage your child to explore word roots, prefixes, and suffixes by examining unfamiliar words in their reading and identifying each component.
- Create a word journal to track and review new vocabulary words, noting roots, prefixes, and suffixes to reinforce understanding.
- Discuss word origins, or etymology, with your child, looking up the historical backgrounds of interesting words and exploring how meanings have evolved.
